How to Read a Swatch

Presenter: Patrice George

Complete analysis of a woven fabric, also known as “reverse analysis”, is practiced by professionals in woven textile design, manufacturing, and archival documentation. This presentation will demonstrate how to “read” design information directly from any woven fabric sample. Analysis steps include identification of pattern and color repeats, weave structures, ends and picks per inch, weight per square yard, and identification of the yarn sizes used in warp and weft. Data collected from analysis provides information needed to calculate supplies needed and loom set up options, to re-create the original swatch. Patrice George is a design consultant to the interior textile industry. Her NYC studio, Patrice George Designs, was founded in 1979. She recently retired from the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she was Associate Professor in the Textile Development and Marketing Department for 18 years. Currently, she is an advisor to students in the Parson’s MFA Textile program on dobby and jacquard design. As an early advocate of computer-aided woven design tools for weavers, she created courses for the School of Visual Arts, FIT and Parsons in the 1980’s. In 1994, she was Fulbright Guest Lecturer , at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki Finland.
