AI and Weaving

Presenter: Alanna Wilcox

Participants will learn how the structure, texture, and color of handwoven cloth can be translated into digital compositions that surprise, delight, and challenge traditional ways of thinking about fiber art. Through side by-side examples, Alanna explains how she photographs her work, uses AI tools to generate variations, and follows intuitive threads between the physical and the digital. By the end of the session, attendees will not only have a better understanding of how AI can be used as a creative tool, but will also leave with fresh ideas for how to approach their own weaving practice. Whether looking for new design inspiration, personal expression, or creative play, this presentation encourages participants to see their woven work in a completely new light. Alanna Wilcox is a fiber artist, professional educator, Master Spinner, and color specialist who brings over 20 years of experience to the fiber community. Whether she’s dyeing, spinning, or exploring new ways to combine digital tools with fiber, Alanna is always creating something expressive and full of color. She earned the OHS Spinning Certificate with distinction in 2015 and completed the Master Spinner Certificate in 2017. Alanna is the author of A New Spin on Color and Color Alchemy: From Digital to Dye, and has developed over 2,000 precision dye formulas that allow artists to match digital images with accuracy. Working with fiber is more than a passion for her—it’s something she lives and breathes, sometimes literally.
